I think we all need a few more azulejos in our lives. That’s the name of the painted ceramic tiles you see all over Portugal 💙 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Their omnipresence in the country is thanks to Manuel I who was Portugal’s king between 1495 and 1521. Like most tourists in Portugal today he was wowed by the painted tiles on a trip abroad. When he was in Spain he loved the tiles in the Alhambra in Granada, and had his palace in Sintra near Lisbon decorated with colourful tiles on his return, starting this stunning Portuguese tradition. The reason many of the tiles in Portugal are blue and white is simply because those colours were in fashion at the time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This photo was taken outside the Chapel of Souls in Porto. My boyfriend had to stand on the other side of a busy road to get as much of the church in as possible. We had to stop quite a few times as people wandered by and cars drove past. When we were finally done I crossed the road ready to continue on and found out a woman who was travelling solo had asked him to do the same for her. I was impressed. Am I a weirdo or does anybody else love going to supermarkets when they’re abroad? I could spend hours in any supermarket in Europe wandering around and checking out what the locals are into. I love trying things I can’t get at home and I love seeing what products have whole aisles dedicated to them when you will barely see that same thing in a British supermarket. I can report the Portuguese have their priorities straight. The supermarkets here have a million types of local cheeses, lots of breads and baked goods, lots of chocolate (although they seem to like dark choc the best whereas I’m a milk choc girl), lots of different flavoured chips (crisps) and lollies, plenty of olives and seafood, lots of wine and an abundance of coffee. Each supermarket has almost an entire aisle dedicated to canned fish and seafood. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sadly our two weeks in Portugal are nearly over. We’re spending our final couple of nights glamping… A first for me. It’s pretty great. The serenity of camping but with a proper bathroom, bed, fridge etc. Basically don’t worry about me guys because my wine is cold! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I know plenty of people can’t travel at the moment so on the topic of food I wanted to share three treats I’ve loved on this trip that are very Portuguese and I’ll be baking or cooking when I get home. Maybe you can too, just Google the recipes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Bolo de Bolacha: this is a Portuguese no-bake coffee cake. It’s delicious and would be easy to make at home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Pumpkin jam!! This has been a major discovery for me. It’s so tasty. Another one that you can easily find recipes for online. They like to eat it with cheese and it’s delicious. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. When you dress to match the city you’re in 🤓. Actually the matchy-matchy was just a happy mistake. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s lovely to be back in Portugal and its quirkiest city Porto. We’re in the north or Portugal for a week before heading down to the Algarve for another week. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With all the tests you need to do for travel these days, we decided to stay a bit longer than usual to make it worth our while. For those asking we needed a negative test and to be fully vaccinated to visit Portugal from the U.K. If you’re not fully vaccinated you have to quarantine for two weeks on arrival. We also need to do tests before we go home to the U.K. and within the first couple of days of being back. But again, as long as you’re fully vaccinated (and don’t test positive of course 😅) you don’t need to quarantine on the U.K. side. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I can’t stand the term ‘new normal’ (can’t we just go back to normal please?!) but I’d say this is the new normal for travel for quite a while to come. It sucks, but it’s worth it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re stuck in lockdown right now like lots of my Australian friends and family or still waiting to be vaccinated: hang in there. WHAT’S YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING TRAVEL MOMENT? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Travelling is one of my fave things in the world. But I’ve had plenty of awkward moments along the way. When you’re in a country with a different culture and language, things can occasionally go askew. One awkward moment that springs to mind was my first ever trip to Paris. At the time I was a vegetarian and this was way back when, so there weren’t many vegetarian options at restaurants and I was having trouble navigating a French menu. I decided to go with what I thought was salad, chips and tartar sauce. Who serves tartar sauce without fish?! Should have been a red flag already 😂. My boyfriend told me to check with the waiter that it was vegetarian, but I was too shy. Can you see what’s coming? I ordered the steak tartare… which if it’s not a dish you’re familiar, is raw minced beef. I’d just ordered a plate of raw meat. I was so grossed out and embarrassed. I didn’t know what to do. My boyfriend wasn’t a vegetarian but was not interested in eating raw meat which didn’t look like the highest quality 😂. I didn’t want to be rude and leave it untouched so I ate the chips and salad and then moved the meat around on the plate so it looked like I’d eaten some and hid some in napkins. Why didn’t I just ask the waiter what he’d recommend a vegetarian to order?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I learnt my lesson on that trip and now I just ask if I’m confused about something when I’m travelling. Locals love when you ask for advice and recommendations… it’s their chance to give you insider tips. Later on in that same trip an Italian chef had a great time making me off-the-menu food when I told the waiter to bring me anything as long as it was vegetarian. It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had 😋. Asos is the prettiest little town you’ve (probably) never heard of. Nestled in-between the ionian cliffs and a Venetian fortress in northern Kefalonia… it’s stunning. This is definitely one to add to your bucket list to visit one day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And when you do, here is a list of things to do while you’re there: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨ Climb up to the top of the Asos fortress and get these amazing views. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨ Stay in Asos. I wouldn’t normally have staying in a specific town in a list of ‘things to do’ but I know lots of people just visit Asos rather than stay there, which I think is a mistake. It’s a tiny town so getting accomm can be hard but if you can stay overnight, you should. It is by far the loveliest place to stay in Kefalonia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨ Go swimming! If you stay in Asos the bay is perfect for swimming. And if you stay elsewhere, you’re never too far from an amazing beach in Kefalonia. The water is super calm and warm so it’s perfect for swimming. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨ Eat fresh seafood in Fiskardo while looking out at the island of Ithaca across the water. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨ Visit Myrtos beach. Currently writing a blog about the best town to stay in when you’re in the Cinque Terre. Of course, it’s only my opinion because clearly there isn’t a right or wrong answer and it depends on a lot of things. This is Monterosso and spoiler alert… it isn’t at the top of my list. But that’s mainly because I’m not really a beach babe. I love swimming but my redhead skin is far too pale to lounge around on the beach all day 😅 But if you love the beach, Monterosso is perfect. Santorini dreaming 💙 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve travelled to a lot of stunning places in Europe which aren’t super well known tourists spots (yet… although they’re getting there!) Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia and the Albanian Riviera are two that come to mind. I’m a big believer that you can have an amazing time and learn and see new things in nearly any place you visit. Don’t ever let anybody tell you a place isn’t worth visiting. But then I also look at my photos of Santorini and I’m like ‘Yup, this is the best’. It’s cliché and I guess it makes me a sheep but I am unashamedly in love with this place. My two favourite tourist hotspots are Santorini and Paris.
